Florence Street Richard Gailey Californian

Nestled in among other homes of Florence Street, Clayfield is this home where the landscaping and gardens complement the design of this Californian bungalow. This style of home was prominent in the era of the late 1920s leading to the second world war. Florence Street was part of the Stanley Hall estate. Stanley Hall the building is now a centre piece within the grounds of St. Rita's College.

Brisbane in the 1920's saw a rapid growth in suburban development based on the extension of trams into the key new suburban housing estates. The areas of Greenslopes, Coorparoo, Clayfield, Ascot and Hamilton, Gordon Park and others were the next ring of housing development. The architects of Brisbane looked at new styles to distinguish the Brisbane home from the southern concept of "timber and tin". Those with means looked at the architectural homes of Eric Trewern, Lange Powell, Chambers and Ford, Richard Gailey, George Rae, A. C. Conrad, J. P. Donoghue and others who were creating the equivalent to today's modern architecturally designed modern homes of distinction. Florence Street and many others in what was the Stanley Hall Estate are reminders of this period of time between the two world wars.
