Riding through the northern suburbs today I took a detour to see a house and park linked to a well known name in Brisbane. T. C. Beirne's department store now redeveloped in Fortitude Valley was a part of my Brisbane young life. The park and house in Hendra is another of the legacies linked to this man. If you do not know who he was do a "Google". While he did not build Glengariff in 1889 the Beirne family made it their home. The park formed part of the grounds of this Brisbane Villa. Built when Queensland was at its most prosperous in the 1880s it is another fine example of homes from a Brisbane past.
The homes of Brisbane reflect more than the evolution of housing in the city. This blog looks at the stories associated with specific occupants of a home. While there will be historical information concerning the house it is the stories of people that shows the historical and social development of Brisbane from 1842 to the present day. All styles of architecture are featured as the style of a home reflects more than the presence it displays.
