Rhyndarra at Yeronga is one of those magnificent 1880's villas that were built by the wealthy in the economic boom of the time. William Williams built Rhyndarra as a semi rural property in 1889. Designed by Andrea Stombuco who also designed "Palma Rosa" the owner Williams had a short time in the property before AMP insurance foreclosed in 1896 as the mortgagee. Just as all houses tell a story this one is very interesting. Williams had a magnificent rural estate in the short period he and the family lived there. He had the contract to provide milk produced by his dairy herd to the South Brisbane Hospital. AMP sold the property to William Booth of the Salvation Army and it was a home for girls until 1942. From 1942 to 1990 it was a Commonwealth Government Military Hospital. Today it stands amid suburban housing and architectural creations once never though of. To stand outside and absorb the presence of it is a credit to those responsible.
The homes of Brisbane reflect more than the evolution of housing in the city. This blog looks at the stories associated with specific occupants of a home. While there will be historical information concerning the house it is the stories of people that shows the historical and social development of Brisbane from 1842 to the present day. All styles of architecture are featured as the style of a home reflects more than the presence it displays.
